I didn't want to post about this since I believe there's been an over reaction to a pretty minor event. A fan was stupid and brushed Sheffield's face (there's no way of knowing if it was intentional or not). Sheffield shouldn't have shoved his hands at a fan's face (especially before throwing the ball to the infield), but I don't blame him for it considering where he was playing, how the rightfield fans must have been treating him all series, and that he got hit in the face. Security then did its job, so there wasn't even an incident...
Until the media got a hold of it. One problem is many sports analysts are former athletes, and, according to them, an athlete is never at fault. The classic example is Tim McCarver defending Jeff Nelson and Karim Garcia for attacking a groundskeeper.
Anyway, Mike Lupica does a much better job than I did putting everything in perspective.
