Coldplay, Mark Blount, & Martina Hingis

In Coldplay's new CD, X&Y, Chris Martin asks, "what if you didn't try?" My first thought was to ask Mark Blount about last season, but I wasn't planning on posting about the Celtics until the draft or when they trade Pierce.

My next thought went to Martina Hingis, the most fortunate number one player in tennis history. Her timing could not be more perfect. She showed up as Steffi Graf was declining and right after the dominate Monica Seles got stabbed. She also arrived before the Williams sisters became good.

Anyway, back to, "What if..." Announcers will never say it, but many professional tennis players will give away a set to rest up for the next one. Jimmy Connors always did this near the end of his career. After having his serve broken early in a set, Connors would not run down balls and only go for low percentage winners. Then, announcers would be amazed at how Connors became rejuvenated at the beginning of the next set. Maybe it was because he took the last one off.

I didn't mind Connors doing this because he was old, but seeing 19-year-old Marina Hingis do it all the time was annoying. She was just an annoying person; if she were in the NBA, she'd be a Pacer. Anyway, it was common to see her win a match 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.

I'm going through all this to introduce you to a new word I use with all my tennis friends. Actually, my tennis friend. When a tennis player gives away a set, we say he or she "Hingissed the set." It's also spread to other sports, such as "it looks like the Spurs are Hingissing game 4."

So trying using this great verb with your friends, and maybe I should start watching sports again because I don't want be a accused of Hingissing my posts.
