Good choice

After Bob Kraft fired Pete Carroll, it came down to choosing between these two options.
  • Hire Belichick and give up some draft picks to the Jets.
  • Keep the draft picks and hire Tom Donohoe as GM and Don Capers as coach.
Let's see, Belichick's won three Super Bowls while Donohoe and Capers have just been fired. The good news is Kraft made the right choice. The bad news is if Donohoe and Capers where in New England, Reggie Bush may have become a Patriot.

I was thinking about this today after reading the article on ESPN.com. Think back to late January of '00. No, I am not referring to the night I got drunk with Alan and the Godfather, them then removing me from Uno's. The Patriots wanted Bellicik, yet the Jets were not budging, since they had the rights to him. So Bob Kraft starts talking with Donahue, and things get serious with him as the new GM. The Jets realize they might get nothing for a coach who doesn't want to be there, so they reach an agreement for a 1st round pick. Newspaper articles, like the one I read in Atlanta, dogged the Pats and mentioned how the Jets had the upper hand with this deal. How funny.
Did Kraft play the Donahue hand to force the Jets to deal? Or was he serious about signing this guy? How scary.
The days after the 2000 season ended were also memorable; Parcells quit, naming his successor. Bellicik then resigns, and is called "Bellichicken" by the NY Post. The Pats then get their coach, which is what Parcells tried to prevent all along. The 1st round pick was worth it.

But at the time wasn't the Godfather telling us Belichick wasn't worth a first rounder?

Alan,
I don't recall saying it at the time he left, but maybe I am wrong. I do recall after Bellicik struggling his first year or two saying that he was not as good a coach without Parcells and many Patriots fans agreed with me. I cannot recall if either you or patsy2k agreed or not. but this entail either of you two admitting that you were wrong which I don't expect to hear anytime in the near future.

The thing with the draft pick is that Bellicik was not going to coach the Jets either way so the draft pick was compensation for the front office jerking him around and him not wanting to be there.

I didn't like the idea of giving up draft picks, but I don't remember being critical of Belichick, even that first season. He inherited a mess, and right from the beginning he sounded like a guy who knew what he was doing. I never imagined he'd be this good though.

Patriotsy2k with his Rain Man memory probably remembers exact quotes.

I was wrong about USC, but the Godfather will forget about me admitting it by next week.

and since I was right about USC, the subject will never, ever be brought up again, but something that I may or may not have said years ago, either drunk or sober, will be repated and exaggerated countless times.

Were you drunk when you wrote that Chad Pennington was going to be a better QB than Brady? Ha ha
